PhD Opportunity – Structural Biology of Transcription (Imperial College London)

Imperial College London, London, United Kingdom
Application deadline: 17 Oct 2025

A fully funded PhD position is available in the newly established Rengachari lab, within the Section for Structural and Synthetic Biology at Imperial College London. The position is open to UK/Home students with a strong background in the life sciences.

Their lab studies the molecular mechanisms of RNA polymerase II transcription, with a particular interest in how these processes influence genome maintenance and how viral infection interrupts these mechanisms. They aim to understand how these pathways become dysregulated in infection, neurodegenerative disease, and cancer. For more information on our research and approach, refer to our recent work on transcription initiation and termination (Rengachari et al., 2024, Nat. Struct. Mol. Biol.; Rengachari et al., 2022, Nat. Struct. Mol. Biol.; Rengachari et al., 2021, Nature).

What they offer

  • The opportunity to join a new and growing lab, with close mentorship and the chance to shape the group’s culture.

  • Training in cutting‑edge structural biology methods (cryo‑EM, biochemistry, and complementary approaches).

  • A collaborative environment within the Section for Structural and Synthetic Biology and the Department of Infectious Disease, with strong links across Imperial and international partners.

  • A project designed to build on your existing skills while giving you scope to grow into an independent researcher.

Candidate profile

  • Degree in life sciences (molecular biology, biochemistry, structural biology, or related fields).

  • Enthusiasm for mechanistic questions in gene expression, genome biology, and host–pathogen interactions.

  • Motivation to work collaboratively and contribute to a supportive lab culture.

How to apply

Interested candidates should send a CV, a short statement of research interests, and the names of at least two referees to s.rengachari@imperial.ac.uk. Informal enquiries are welcome. Overseas candidates interested in applying for external fellowships are also encouraged to get in touch.
