The project will investigate mechanisms governing virulence and antibacterial properties of protein fibrils in infectious and aggregation diseases. The research methods include single particle cryoEM reconstruction, cryoEM tomography, x-ray crystallography, correlative light and electron microscopy, artificial membrane systems (supported lipid bilayers, liposomes), and live cell microscopy to study toxicity mechanisms of fibrils on bacteria and mammalian cells and within microbial biofilms.

The project will be carried out at the CSSB, Center for Structural Systems Biology, hosted by the Sondermann group, and in close collaboration and supervision by the Landau group at Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. The project will enjoy the state-of-the-art high-end facilities at the CSSB within the thriving research environment for structural biology on the DESY campus.
