The Department of Chemistry, with more than 200 employees, is one of the largest departments at Stockholm University. Project description
This project aims at the structural investigation of nanoporous materials, including their interaction with guest species within the pores of the material, in order to create a deeper understanding of their chemical properties. Over the last decade, electron crystallography methods such as 3D electron diffraction (3D ED) and emerging imaging techniques in the aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope have been developed into a toolbox pushing the limits of our understanding of the atomic structure of materials.
The properties of materials are determined by their structures at the atomic and molecular scale, and their selectivity as catalysts, adsorbents are largely governed by their structure and chemical functionality. In this project, we will utilize and develop advanced techniques based in the transmission electron microscope, such as three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED) and phase-contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) for structure analysis of nanoporous materials such as zeolites, MOFs etc. at the atomic scale.

Main responsibilities
The project aims to conduct and develop protocols for structural investigations of nanoporous materials such as zeolites and MOFs at the atomic scale, including disorders and guest species. For this purpose, the candidate will utilize techniques based on electron crystallography, such as 3D electron diffraction (3D ED/MicroED) and STEM imaging. This project includes development of protocols for the acquisition and analysis of electron microscopy data and their applications to the investigation of atomic structures of nanoporous materials.
Qualification requirements
In order to qualify for a Postdoctoral position, applicants are required to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent relevant degree from another country. The degree must have been completed no later than when the employment decision is made.
Assessment criteria
It is considered an advantage if the doctoral degree or an equivalent degree was completed no more than three years prior to the application deadline. Under special circumstances, an older degree may also be an advantage. Special circumstances refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills relevant to this project. We are looking for an excellent candidate with prior experience in structural characterization using electron microscopy/crystallography methods and nanoporous materials. Familiarity with 3D electron diffraction, aberration-corrected (S)TEM, zeolites, MOFs or crystallography is beneficial. Demonstrable experience with advanced techniques in the TEM, such as integrated differential phase contrast (iDPC)-STEM, and/or ptychography is advantageous. Experience in scientific programming and/or familiarity with electron beam-sensitive specimens will be an asset. Given that the project will involve international collaborations both in academia and industry, excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.
About the employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date as per agreement.
